Individuals and families with the name Kassel are recorded in Frankfurt as early as 1360, long before the creation of the ghetto. In later periods Jews from Kassel migrated to Frankfurt at frequent intervals. They formed links through marriage with both the Goldschmidt and Buchsbaum families. After this the name Kassel only appears as part of a double name, such as GoldschmidtKassel. During the 17th century individual members of the family achieved high status in the Jewish community, as shown by their holding office as "master builders". By contrast, one male member of the family called Mosche von Kassel zur Wanne became a convert to Christianity.
